Middle phalange of an extinct horse (Equus alaskae) found impaled with a worked limestone wedge, the sharp tip of which (right) was imbedded 1.5 cm. into the distal subchondral plate. This impaction was the probable cause of the obvious fracture through the bone. Boiling split bones for soup was a common practice in early cultures. |
