Alumni
October 2009
Dear Anthropology Alumni,
Greetings from Amherst! I am writing to let you know about two
exciting events, and please save the date(s):
(1) We will be continuing the tradition of our "Alumni and Friends"
reception at the American Anthropological Association (AAA) meetings,
this year in Philadelphia, Thursday, Dec 3, 7:45-9:45 PM. Come eat and
have a drink with old and new friends!
(2) There will also be a session at AAA marking the 40th Anniversary
of our European Field Studies Program, Weds, Dec 2, 8 PM, "SHIFTING
FIELDS IN A TRANSFORMING EUROPE: COMMEMORATING 40 YEARS OF EUROPEAN
FIELD STUDIES," organized by Krista Harper, chaired by Jackie Urla,
and with papers by Carole Counihan, Frank Williams, Angele Smith,
Milena Marchesi, Martin Wobst, and David Kideckel.
(3) I have been working with our Alumni Advisory Board and members and
faculty and students on our department's 40th Anniversary Celebration,
April 23-25, 2009. Please save the date with more details to follow.
(4) On a very sad note, I also write to inform you that Dick Woodbury
passed away two weeks ago. Dick lost his wife Natalie earlier this
year, and those of you who knew him know that he simply could not live
without her. We are planning a celebration of Dick and Natalie and
their contributions to our department and to the field of anthropology
at our 40th Anniversary Celebration. We grieve our loss, but we also
want to celebrate their lives! More info on that to come.
Best regards,
Elizabeth S. Chilton, PhD ‘96
Chair, Department of Anthropology
