Tips for Effective Advocacy:
Keep the Message Positive

Why Keep the Message Positive?

The University's reputation and status is dependent on the image it projects.

The first rule of public relations is to never mix messages.

Educating legislators and others about the value UMass brings to Massachusetts will build long-term political support.

Our task is to persuade the governor, the state legislature, and other key policy/opinion leaders that a top quality public higher education system is essential in this state dominated by private colleges and universities.

Does a Positive Message Make a Difference?

Yes, it does.

Contacting community leaders, elected officials, legislators, and key opinion leaders is a way to educate the Commonwealth of the value UMass adds to Massachusetts.

Legislators are receptive to the concerns of their constituents.

Support for UMass is an on-going effort.

The current economic landscape is part of a cycle. Good times come and go. The long-term ramifications of short term solutions makes a difference to the health and well-being of the University. UMass advocacy is an on-going effort.

Legislators are elected for 2 year terms. There is a constant ebb and flow within the legislature, but UMass needs to remain a constant. Creating a solid base of support is important and needs to be maintained despite the many changes within the State House.

Legislators are stewards of the state University and should take pride in it.

Tell them why they should be proud and why their partnership is vital to the success of the state university.
