JANUARY 2000

Action:  Sign up for legislative, electoral and admissions advocacy in Spring 2000.

Deadline: February 15, 2000

Date: January 2000

Sign-up Now for Spring Advocacy

Background: Advance planning lets us deploy our volunteers most effectively. Tell us which of the following you plan to do:

  • Host a candidates' coffee this election year. Massachusetts’ state legislative elections are scheduled for November 2000. Make UMass an election issue in your district this year. Invite all the candidates to meet UMass alumni, parents and friends from your area at a low-key, social event. We will help you produce a simple, successful coffee in your home or another location such as a library or VFW hall.

  • Visit your Representative & Senator this spring. You are the reason that UMass will become a priority for your legislators. We need all Massachusetts Ambassadors to visit their legislators during budget advocacy season. Many Ambassadors made these visits last year. These experienced advocates and the Advocacy Programs staff will help you make your visit a success.

  • Phone accepted students and encourage them to choose UMass. Personal contacts encourage accepted students to enroll at UMass. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions coordinates a telephone campaign to accepted students from March through mid-April. Call ten or more prospective students from the comfort of your own home or office. The closing date on the sign-up of this activity is February 4, 2000.

Sign up now for any or all of these important activities. You will receive a detailed resource packet and personal contact from UMass staff to support your efforts.

You don't know who your Massachusetts Representative and Senator are? Contact your local town or city clerk's office for the information. They are listed in the white pages under your town government's listing. You can also visit the Ward Precinct and Polling Place Search for Massachusetts Citizens to find your state and federal legislators. You can also call us toll-free at 800-772-6155.
