Advocacy Action Alert!

Action: Call Your Massachusetts State Representative to Support UMass Budget Amendments
Time to act: May 9 - May 17, 2002
Date: May 2002

Dear UMass Advocate:

We need you to ACT NOW. Call your MA state Representative to support amendments increasing the University system's appropriation.

Debate on the amendments began Wednesday, May 8, 2002 and will likely continue through May 17, 2002.

Your prompt response to this action alert is appreciated, as amendments are not debated in order.

Telephone calls are the most effective method for completing this action alert.

If you are not a MA resident, but would like to help, forward this message to friends and family in MA, and encourage them to call their MA state Representatives.

Call the State House Switchboard at 617-722-2000 and ask to be connected to your Representative's office .

Ask your Representative to support the following amendments increasing the University's appropriation.

If your Representative has sponsored or co-sponsored an amendment favorable to UMass, please thank him/her for supporting the University.

Please support these amendments:

House Amendment 428* sponsored by Representative Joseph Sullivan [D-Braintree] amends Line Item 7100-0200. This amendment increases the University's appropriation by $37 million -- from $434.7 million to $472.1 million.

House amendment 504 sponsored by Representative Ellen Story [D-Amherst] amends Line item 7077-0010 to restore $5 million to the account for the acquisition of library reference materials. This account was zero funded in the FY 03 budget. Restoration of these funds will enable the state public colleges and the University to purchase library materials.

This amendment was co-sponsored by Rep. Patrick [D-Falmouth], Rep. Spilka [D-Ashland], Rep. Merrigan [D-Greenfield], Rep. Hodgkins [D-Lee], Rep. Paulsen [D-Belmont], Rep. Smizik [D-Brookline], Rep. Kulik [D-Worthington], Rep. Kafka [D-Sharon], Rep. Falzone [D-Saugus], Rep. Jehlen [D-Somerville], Rep. Cleven [R-Chelmsford], Rep. Swan [D-Springfield], Rep. Kocot [D-Northampton], Rep. Kennedy [D-Brockton], and Rep. Speliotis [D-Danvers].

House Amendment 47 sponsored by Representative Carol Dovonvan [D-Woburn] amends Line Item 7100-0500 increasing the appropriation to Commonwealth College from $1.62 million to $1.71 million.

House Amendment 1324 sponsored by Representative Joseph Sullivan [D-Braintree] amends Line Item 7100-0445 by providing $10 million for matching funds for the President's Endowed Professorships.

This was zero funded in the FY 03 budget. State matching funds stimulates private fundraising efforts and shows donors that their gifts are not a substitute for state funding.

FYI

You can view the amendments .

Marzilli [D-Arlington], Rep. Merrigan [D-Greenfield], Rep. Hodgkins [D-Lee], Rep. Paulsen [D-Belmont], Rep. Smizik [D-Brookline], Rep. Balser [D-Newton], Rep. Spilka [D-Ashland], Rep. Carron [D-Southbridge], Rep. Linsky [D-Natick], Rep. Atkins [D-Concord], Rep. Kulik [D-Worthington], Rep. Petersen [D-Marblehead], Rep. Travis [D-Rehoboth], Rep. Timilty [D-Milton], Rep. Kafka [D-Sharon], Rep. Falzone [D-Saugus], Rep. Jehlen [D-Somerville], Rep. Swan [D-Springfield], Rep. Kocot [D-Northampton], and Rep. Kennedy [D-Brockton].
