UMass Amherst Alerts

Outdoor Warning System

The UMass Amherst Alerts emergency notification system has eight outdoor warning sirens located throughout campus that may be used to notify persons of an existing or imminent threat to the campus community.

The warning system will provide an alert tone to notify the campus community of a situation followed by a brief prerecorded hazard announcement. It is also capable of providing live public address announcements for additional information. The all clear tone will sound when the situation has been resolved.

The system is designed to be heard outdoors only—not within campus buildings.

Examples of Siren Activations:
  • Weather Emergencies (Tornado or Severe Thunderstorm Warning)
  • Hazardous Material Emergencies
  • Active Threat situation on or near campus
  • Other dangerous situations
  • System Administrative Activities
  • All Clear

The siren warning may or may not provide additional voice instructions. If you are unable to understand a voice instruction, the default action should always be to take shelter in the nearest building and seek further information.

System Alert Tones:

  • All Clear tone
