Work in progress: The Spirit of Providence
Historically
religious women have made enormous contributions to American society as teachers,
nurses and social workers, yet they remain invisible. They founded,
staffed and often funded many of the first non-profit hospitals, schools and
social service institutions across the country. On the Civil War
battlefields, Catholic Sisters were some of the best trained nurses who compassionately
nursed both sides.
This documentary looks at the history of Catholic Sisters in America and specifically
the Sisters of Providence, who came to Holyoke, MA in 1873 to aid orphans, the
poor, and the sick. They developed a comprehensive network of non-profit health
care and social service facilities across Western Massachusetts that grew and
changed to meet the community ‘s needs. Today they operate a health
care system, which is the fourth largest employer in Western Massachusetts and
they sponsor a variety of social service ministries. From providing health care
to the homeless, shelters, drug rehab, and soup kitchens these women remain a
vital force for social justice.
This project has received pre-production funding from the Massachusetts Foundation
for the Humanities and the Holyoke Cultural Council.
