There
are four primary units that contribute to the agricultural
activities at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
These are the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station,
UMass Extension, the Stockbridge School of Agriculture,
and the College of Natural Resources and the Environment.
The four units work synergistically to provide research,
teaching and outreach in the areas of food and fiber
production, distribution, and safety.

Agricultural Experiment Station

The
Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station is the principal
agricultural research unit at the University. The experiment
station supports the scientific research of nearly 100
faculty members located within the College of Natural Resources
and the Environment. While it is supported in part by a
federal appropriation, the primary sources of revenue for
the experiment station’s activities are competitive
research grants from federal, state and private sources. |

UMass
Extension provides outreach to the agricultural community
through its Agriculture and Landscape Program. The focus
of the program is to work in partnership with individual
agricultural businesses and industries through teams organized
in the following areas: Cranberry, Crops, Dairy & Livestock,
Floriculture, Fruit, Integrated Pest Management, Landscape,
Nursery and Urban Forestry, Pesticide Education and Analysis,
Soil and Plant Nutrition, Turf, and Vegetable. |
Stockbridge
School of Agriculture

The
Stockbridge School of Agriculture is a two-year program
leading to the Associates Degree. The program offers majors
in six different areas: Arboriculture and Park Management,
Equine Industries, Fruit and Vegetable Crops, Horticulture,
Landscape Contracting, and Turfgrass Management. The Stockbridge
School is administered through the College of Natural Resources
and the Environment. |

The
College of Natural Resources and the Environment offers
four year degree programs through the following departments:
Entomology, Food Science, Landscape Architecture and Regional
Planning, Microbiology, Natural Resources Conservation,
Plant and Soil Sciences, Resource Economics, and Veterinary
and Animal Sciences. In addition, the faculty of the college
is the engine that drives the research of the Massachusetts
Agricultural Experiment Station, the core of teaching expertise
for the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, and a partner
in the outreach activities of Umass Extension. |
