Utilized Production – Massachusetts Loses Its Lead
The most dramatic and also most relevant trends have been the growth in Wisconsin's harvested acreage and yield. Massachusetts, the largest producer of cranberries for most of the industry's history, was challenged and eventually overtaken as the world's leader in cranberry production in 1995. Combining harvested acreage and yield, and subtracting cranberries that are not marketed, gives utilized production. The graph of utilized production shows the change in leadership of cranberry production. In 1995, Wisconsin produced 1.80 million barrels of cranberries to Massachusetts' 1.59 million barrels. Wisconsin's production has trended upwards from 1990 to 2006, while Massachusetts production has been fairly stagnant reflecting trends in harvested acreage and yields.
