Bail Funds, Buying Freedom, and a History of Abolition
Julia Wallace Bernier is an Assistant Professor of History and Black Studies at the University of North Alabama. After finishing her PhD in Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst, she was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for the Study of Slavery at Georgetown University. Her research focuses on slavery and abolition in the nineteenth century United States. Her current book project, Freedom's Currency: Self-Purchase in the Antebellum United States, is forthcoming from Yale University Press.
