Community Cultural Planning Handbook: A guide for community leaders

Book Craig Dreeszen, Ph.D. 1997. Published by Americans for the Arts, Washington, D.C. Distributed by Americans for the Arts and The Arts Extension Service

Book Description

The Community Cultural Planning Handbook provides an overview of the practice of cultural planning. It is intended to help local officials and community and cultural leaders decide if cultural planning makes sense for their communities, and if so, how to proceed. Community cultural planning can be used to identify and mobilize cultural resources in service of improved cultural and community development.

Community cultural planning is a:

  • Structured, community-wide fact-finding and consensus-building process;
  • Means to identify cultural resources, community needs, and opportunities; and
  • Way to plan actions and secure resources to respond.

The handbook

  • Defines cultural planning;
  • Provides a checklist of community readiness for cultural planning;
  • Describes nine types of plans;
  • Outlines the typical planning team;
  • Presents the results of the author's national study of cultural planning with costs of planning, typical sources of planning funds, length of time devoted to planning, reported effects on local arts agencies and communities, predictable problems, and patterns of planning goals;
  • Offers recommendations for more effective cultural planning;
  • Profiles seven community cultural plans;
  • Lists national, state, and local sources for additional help; and
  • Provides a cultural planning bibliography.
