The University Museum of Contemporary Art – the teaching museum of the University Massachusetts Amherst – is a multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art. Through exhibitions, a permanent collection, educational programming, and a visiting artists program, the University Museum of Contemporary Art acts as a forum where renowned and emerging artists can test ideas and where diverse audiences can participate in cultural experiences that enhance understanding of the art of our time.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: UMCA Internships offer valuable experience in the everyday workings of a university art museum. We provide internships in four main areas: Social Media, Collections Management, Installation, & Museum Education. Students work closely with UMCA staff to identify projects in their interest area and develop a series of tasks that both aid the museum in its daily operations and provide a valuable learning experience. You can assist with research for exhibitions and cataloging works of art (Collections Management); help with publicity and work on the UMCA’s social media platforms (Social Media); participate in installations and prepare the museum for exhibitions (Installation); or develop educational materials, outreach strategies, community engagement and public programs for our visitors (Museum Education). Internships for course credit are available in coordination with many academic departments in fulfilling course requirements.

PERIOD OF INTERNSHIP/EMPLOYMENT: Opportunities are available for Spring 2020.

PAY TYPE: Unpaid, can be done for course credit for 1, 2 or 3 credits


JOB STATUS: Part-time, flexible.

LOCATION: University Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the lower level of the Fine Arts Center on UMass Campus.
