The UMass Arts Extension Service and The Department of Art, Architecture, and Art History are pleased to welcome the second “Art Star” Visiting Artist Lecture speaker of 2014, artist Summer Wheat to UMass at 4:30 on Thursday April 3rd, in the Studio Arts Building Room 240, 110 Thatcher Way, Amherst, MA. This event is free and open to the public and is funded in part by the UMass Arts Council, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Summer Wheat received her B.A. from the University of Central Oklahoma and her M.F.A from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Summer Wheat describes her own pieces as “sensual, disturbing, ugly, but beautiful.” Using vivid, clashing colors and thick impasto, she applies paint to canvas in a variety of non-traditional ways, including syringes, mops, and brooms. Wheat’s influences include Sue Williams, Carroll Dunham, Pablo Picasso, and Willem de Kooning, and her own work joins together abstract elements and figurative forms. Wheat has used her garish and grotesque aesthetic to make social critique, parodying members of both the wealthy and destitute classes.
Wheat’s solo exhibitions include Few and Far Between, Cress Gallery of Art, TN; Hi Lo, Samson Projects, Boston, MA; It Was the Best of Times, Valentine, Ridgewood, NY; Succulent, 2 Car Garage Gallery, Savannah, GA; Purple Bluff, TPP, Puerto Rico; No Dumping, Pei Ling Chan Gallery, Savannah, GA; Office Work, Orleans Hall, Savannah GA; Free Associations, 303 West 5th Street Gallery, Austin, TX. Group exhibitions include FOUR PAINTINGS, Regina Rex, Queens, NY; Go Face Yourself, Nancy Lincoln Gallery, Chestnut Hill, MA; Boston Contemporary, Four Eleven Studio, Provincetown, MA; ICA Collection: Expanding the Field of Painting, The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; and many more.
The UMass Art Stars Lecture Series brings artists of distinction to UMass to share the stories of their art and their art career with student artists. On April 17th, Anne Pasternak, Director of Creative Time, will present via video conference at the new Commonwealth Honors College Event Hall, room 160E.
