MAJORS FAIR

Practical Steps in Choosing A Major

 

Step1: Self-Assessment


  • Interests: What do you like to do?
  • Talents: What do you do well?
  • Values: What is important to you (salary, time commitment, prestige, power, helping others, etc)?

  • Utilize the following resources to learn more about yourself:

    Step2: Information Gathering


    Research the major choices available to you

  • Explore the UMass department websites
  • Talk with upper class students, professors and alumni
  • Attend the Majors Fair: Wednesday, October 24th 5:30-7:30 PM
  • Meet with an advisor in Undergraduate Advising (545-2191)


  • Focus on those that are of interest to you

  • Enroll in introductory level courses in the department
  • Meet with the Chief Undergraduate Advisor in the department
  • Review the prerequisites and the process for getting admitted into the major
  • Learn about specific graduation requirements (# of credits, specific courses, math, language).
  • Step3: Evaluation/Reflection/Decision Making


  • Evaluate your experience in the introductory level ccourses
  • Compare your strengths and interests with the requirements of the department
  • Prioritize your top choices and talk with your Academic Advisor to develop a plan to move forward in declaring a major
  • Step4: Implement Your Action Plan


  • Declare your major! Speak with your advisor in Undergraduate Advising for details
