Housing at UMass Amherst
One of the best aspects of any college experience is living on campus. At UMass Amherst you have so many living options, and such an array of special programs, that you be able to make yourself a real home away from home.
The residence hall is where a significant amount of the fun and learning takes place. You get to live with your friends and classmates, studying together, sharing meals, and just hanging out (having extremely highbrow discussions in the middle of the night, debating whether Superman or Batman would win in a fight). You’ll learn to live as part of a community, and your capacity for consideration, tolerance, and responsibility will grow enormously, as will your independence and self-reliance. Living on campus puts you right in the middle of everything that’s happening socially, culturally, artistically, and educationally. It also puts you right in the middle of a huge support system, with people and resources to help you out at every turn.
Residency Requirements
UMass Amherst requires full-time freshmen and sophomores to live on campus. There are some exceptions to this requirement (go to the Housing website for more on residency exceptions), but most students couldn’t imagine living anywhere else during those first few years.
