Student Health Coverage

Student Health Insurance Plan

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires students to be enrolled in a U.S.-based major medical insurance plan. If you do not have your own insurance, you will pay a fee on your tuition bill for the Student Health Insurance Plan. This will cover hospitalization and specialty care not covered by the Basic Health plan (below). If you do have comparable insurance and do not need the Student Health Insurance Plan, you can request a waiver. If you do not process a waiver application, UMass Amherst will automatically enroll you in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Basic Health Plan

All students taking more than five credits are required to purchase the Basic Health Plan in addition to the Student Health Insurance Plan. It provides 24-hour urgent care services, mental health services, and a wide array of medical services.

Family Coverage

Your spouse, same-sex domestic partner, and/or your children may, for an additional fee, enroll in the Student Family Plan.

The Bursar’s Office website has more details about the Student Health Insurance Fee and the Basic Health Fee on their fee explanation page.
