Health and Safety

UMass Amherst’s mission is to ensure that students get a first rate education. We know that to achieve that, our students must be healthy, happy, and safe, and we have many resources to make sure that happens.

Health Services

University Health Services (UHS) provides a wide range of services to keep you in good shape. The UHS staff includes Board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and a variety of support staff, and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). They provide comprehensive health care to students, including medical, eye care, mental health, specialty clinics, and health education.

UHS is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the academic semesters and is conveniently located in the Central residence area.

At UHS, you’ll have access to routine care, such as annual physicals, gynecological or contraception visits, and well baby care. You’ll also be able to get there for same or next day care for acute problems. The Urgent Care clinic is available for urgent situations such as possible fractures, asthma attacks, severe abdominal pain, etc… For an emergency—a life threatening situation—you’ll need to call an ambulance for direct transportation to a hospital emergency room. The closest is Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

On-Going Medical Concerns

If you are under medical supervision before coming to UMass Amherst, it's a good idea to have your physician send reports and instructions to UHS so that they can continue to give you appropriate care. Contact UHS at 413-577-5000 for details on how to provide that information.
