Greek Life

Greek Life at UMass Amherst has a long and rich tradition, and is, in fact, as old as the school itself. Joining a fraternity or a sorority can be an ideal way to experience all of the things that make life at UMass Amherst so great, with an emphasis on academics, social life, community service, sports and recreation, and career development. Each chapter has particular strengths and interests that make it unique. There are also opportunities at UMass Amherst to join traditionally African-American, Latino/Latina, Asian-American, and multicultural fraternities and sororities (although all of the Greek organizations are open to anyone, no matter their background). Being a part of Greek life will help you build character and leadership skills, learn about teamwork and fundraising, give back to the campus and Amherst communities, get involved in UMass Amherst events, develop an amazing network, and make friends for life. You’ll become part of the tradition, and really, a family.

Most of the fraternities and sororities on campus participate in a formal recruitment process in the fall and then have a more open process during other parts of the year. You can jump into the process as a freshman, or wait until later.

If you’re a member of a fraternity or sorority, and at least a sophomore, you can live in the chapter house (if they have one) as an alternative to living in the residence hall.

Greek Affairs at UMass Amherst oversees the various aspects of Greek Life. You can find a list of chapters, get information on rush, and learn more about your options at their website.

Hazing

The dreaded word! A lot of students interested in Greek life are concerned about hazing. Be assured that hazing is prohibited at UMass Amherst and opposed by Greek organizations. In fact, under Massachusetts law, hazing is a crime. You can read more about hazing laws and policies on the Greek Affairs site.
