Diversity

UMass Amherst students come from everywhere, making this small town in Western Massachusetts surprisingly diverse. Students come from all 50 states and over 70 countries (from as far away as Tajikistan and Malaysia and as close as Canada and Mexico), and with its ethnic and cultural diversity, UMass Amherst looks like a league of nations.

And the diversity at UMass Amherst is, well, diverse. You’ll find friends and neighbors from a range of backgrounds, differing in ethnicity, race and religion, the region or country they came from, the languages they speak, their sexual orientation, and their economic background. Some come from a long line of college graduates and some are the first in their families to attend a university. Some are very urban, others come from small rural towns, and still others are from our own backyard. Some are conservative, others are liberal, and many are in-between, which should become clear at election time. Add to all of this the international flavor of the school, the reach of its study-abroad programs, and the many strengths of its richly varied curriculum, and you have a school that puts the world at your feet.

UMass Amherst rigorously seeks ways to highlight and celebrate its diversity. It’s part of the “invisible education” that goes on here. Through Registered Student Organizations, the Office of Programs and Services for ALANA (Asian, Latino, African, and Native American) Students, Everywoman's Center, special housing options, cultural centers, and international programs, there are a heck of a lot of ways to connect with each other and with the world.
