Art, Entertainment, and Events

There’s so much to do at UMass Amherst and around the Pioneer Valley that there's a good chance you won’t ever be bored: Concerts for every musical taste, dance and theater performance from the familiar to the avant-garde, commercial movie theaters and small art film houses, art galleries and museums, stand-up comedy, lectures and seminars, and hands-on workshops. Many of the events are inexpensive or free for students. Whether you want to participate in the arts or entertainment, or just enjoy a spot in the audience, you’ll have dozens of opportunities.

Calendars and Links

Your first step in finding out what’s happening is the UMass Events Calendar. The calendar includes information on all types of events: art and exhibits, lectures and seminars, music, film, theater and dance, sports, and special events. Updated regularly, you can get information on all campus events for the day, the week, or the month.

If you’d like to go right to the source, the Music and Dance Department and the Theater Department have their own events calendars as well.

If you’re up for leaving home, you can peruse the Five College Events Calendar and see what they have planned at Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges.

To get a broader view of what’s going on throughout the region, check out the UMass Amherst Arts Council Events Calendar. This brings together arts calendars from all over western Massachusetts and includes links to all sorts of arts and entertainment sites.

Into Music?

Marching Band

One of the true collegiate experiences is participating in or watching your school’s marching band. The Minuteman Marching Band has long been a source of pride for UMass Amherst and the surrounding region. At every home football game, the “Power and Class” performs its traditional Post Game show for thousands of enthusiastic dedicated fans, who don’t leave the stadium until the last note. In 1998, the Minuteman Marching Band received the Louis C. Sudler Trophy, the highest honor awarded to a collegiate marching band.
