Campus Life: Learn, Grow, Have Fun, and Chill

We all know that university life is so much more than the classroom and the research lab. While UMass Amherst students take their academic work seriously, a big chunk of their education comes from time spent outside of class, what we like to call the Invisible Education. As a UMass Amherst student you’ll be able to complement your intellectual life with hundreds of possible activities.

It starts with where you live, with the social and cultural life you’ll find in the residence halls. Beyond the residence halls, the options are endless: take in artistic and cultural performances or participate in them yourself, get sweaty playing an intramural sport or watch someone else get sweaty at an NCAA competition, throw yourself into community service, student government, religious groups, cultural centers, or student businesses. Create something entirely new.

Even better, as a student at UMass Amherst you are not limited to our student organizations. You can join groups at any of the Five Colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Smith). Go to the Five Colleges website for a comprehensive listing of student clubs and organizations associated with all of their schools.

Get off campus and you’ll double your learning and double your fun with the opportunities you’ll find throughout the Pioneer Valley community, especially in Amherst and Northampton.

First Week

As a UMass Amherst student you’ll get an astounding intro to our campus life during First Week.

You’ll participate in a dizzying array of events: some social (with excellent food), some cultural and intellectual. Still others will help you get acclimated to college life and ready for classes.

From your Class Barbecue to midnight breakfasts, to nationally known speakers and comedians, new students will quickly become part of the UMass Amherst community.
