Undeclared

Some students enter UMass Amherst already accepted into a major but the majority do not.

Undergraduate Advising (UA) guides students who are exploring academic options and aids them with their academic decisions. Students can get assistance from academic deans and advising staff with choosing a major, making a transition between majors, developing an academic plan, and advancing towards graduation in a timely manner.

Major/Career

You may have some majors in mind, but you don’t know how they translate into a career. Or, you may have a specific career that sounds interesting, but you don’t know which major will best prepare you for that road. This is where Career Services comes in. Part of their mission is to help students bring majors and careers together. They can help you choose majors and work experience that will prepare you for work in the foreign service, for example, or they can show you how a major in Philosophy may translate into your life’s work.

We recommend that students choose a major no later than the spring of their sophomore year. However, the earlier you make this decision, the more time you will have to complete all the requirements for your degree.

Follow Your Gut

We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: When choosing a major, make sure it is something that you enjoy. If you have fun in your classes and find the work interesting, you’re much more likely to be successful.
