Career Services

It’s never too early to start thinking about your career. Things you do in college will help you to secure your first, third, or maybe even your tenth job. Career Services at UMass Amherst will be there to help you all along the way. From decisions about your major to the final job search, they’ve got the advisors and the resources to help you get the most out of your education.

The staff at the Career Services Office can help you plan for your future as early as your first year on campus. Your career counselor can help you identify skills and interests with various assessment tests and will help you develop a major and career plan. Throughout your time at UMass Amherst, they may assist in finding an internship or other field experience and writing a resume, or they may give you interviewing advice and point you toward job opportunities. They can also assist you in each step toward graduate or professional school. Additionally, Career Services hosts career fairs, where students can meet potential employers, as well as other career related programs and events.

Your major department can also help you develop your career. You’ll have the opportunity to get involved with student groups that are specific to your major and field, talk to your faculty about gaining experience, and look into internships through the department. The W.E.B. Dubois Library comes into play here as well, with information on national and field specific internship opportunities. To check that out, go to the Library's list of Internship Resources.

So, if you want to major in English, but don’t know what to do with it, or if you dream of being the next Jack Welch (retired CEO of General Electric and UMass Amherst graduate) but don’t know how to best prepare, be assured that Career Services will help you figure it all out.
