The work of Springfield’s BGS participants connects with and contributes to a holistic educational approach that is focused on community needs. Springfield’s BGS cohort of community leaders is exploring a wide range of health issues that impact local families. Under the leadership of Dr. Idalí Torres and her assistant Elissa Small of the UMass School of Public Health, participants are currently conducting studies into such issues as asthma, obesity, diabetes and

environmentally-induced illnesses.

Many of the Springfield BGS participants are also sharing their academic learning and community work with wider professional audiences at regional research conferences. As community leaders, the BGS students are making important contributions to the broader discussions around key social issues and helping to bridge gaps between higher education and community education.
