615X - Practitioner Research (Spring 05) - In this class we will explore the role of research in relation to the lives of teachers and their students in the Springfield Public Schools. “Why should teachers think about questions involving research in relation to their work?” “Why should teachers consider doing their own classroom-based research?” “How does practitioner inquiry intersect with the practices of teaching?” As teachers in the class begin to research their own teaching, the essential question of the course becomes: What does it mean for teachers in the Springfield Public Schools to take an inquiry stance on their own practice? The main focus of this class is for Springfield teachers to investigate one genre of educational research – practitioner research.

L1&L2 Language Learning &Teaching (Spring 05)
- In our everyday practices, we all have opinions about how first and second languages are learned and should be taught. Our opinions, or what might be called our “theories,” whether derived from personal experiences or from reading books and articles, shape the kinds of learning opportunities we provide English language learners (ELLs). These theories, therefore, are highly consequential to the academic development of our students. For this reason, the purpose of this course is to support students in constructing a highly informed, explicit theory of second language learning based on an analysis of classroom interactions.

- The purpose of this course is to provide beginning and experienced teachers with a forum for researching how their classroom practices support and/or constrain the literacy development of second language learners, specifically students’ ability to produce and interpret academic texts in a critical way.

- SPAN 497 - Intensive Spanish:
Sheltered Instruction Part 2 (Spring 06) - This is the second in a series of 2 courses designed to both promote the learning of Spanish, as well as to provide professional development for teachers in two types of language programs: Sheltered Instruction and Dual Immersion. In this course, approaches to teaching another language and literacy will be experienced first-hand by the participants. This means students will be taught in Sheltered Spanish during the first phase of the course and, finally, in both Spanish and English for the last phase of the course in Dual Immersion.

(Spring 06) - This course is designed as an introduction to the field of testing, assessment and evaluation in language and literacy education. We will specifically examine these issues involved in teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students in classroom settings that range from K-12.
