Theresa Austin, (Ph.D., 1991,UCLA) researches how languages and literacies are
learned through schooling. She is concerned with analyzing bilingual
socialization, academic literacies and curricular practices that afford
students support to fully develop their multilingualism and multiculturalism.
As a teacher educator, she is currently directing a Title VII funded project to
prepare paraprofessionals to become teachers in one of the projects sponsored
by the Access to Critical Content and English Language Acquisition Alliance, at
the School of Education at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Theresa has also served as a consultant to the National Boards for
Professionals and designed bilingual teacher and student language proficiency
assessments at several major universities in Mas sachusetts, California, New
York, Japan and Colombia.

Dr. Austin is associate professor  and past Chair of the Language, Literacy and
Culture Concentration at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Austin
is the co-autor (with Marjorie Hall Haley ) of "An Interactive Approach to
Content Based Language Teaching and Learning, Allyn & Bacon 2003. Her articles
have been published in Foreign Language Annals, NABE Journal, Journal Asian
Pacific Communication and various professional newsletters for researchers and
teachers in language education.
