Bachelor of General Studies - Continuing Education
Interdisciplinary Studies in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities

The Inquiry into Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Communities is a Bachelor of General Studies program sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The program, funded through a Title VII Career Ladder Grant, aims to increase the number of bilingual teachers who understand and draw on the languages and cultures of the children they serve, work effectively with English language learners, and enable children to develop strong academic skills.

One of the main objectives of the program is to enable bilingual professionals to obtain their bachelor's degree in a program that provides the prerequisites for pursuing licensure in elementary education. Therefore the program provides students with an interdisciplinary major that explores the social, economic, political, environmental, educational, and cultural conditions shaping the experiences of families living in linguistically and culturally diverse communities.

It has recruited bilingual paraprofessionals and school staff who currently live and/or work locally, and who are interested in pursuing elementary licensure after completing their degree. Inquiry-based courses have been taught by UMass faculty and doctoral students from the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, and the School of Education.
